Voter Information

Voters & Candidates.

For important dates/deadlines for  upcoming elections, go to the RI Department of State Voter Information Center website at (https://vote.sos.ri.gov).

Confirming Voter Information.

The Canvassing office processes changes to voter records based upon information provided by the voter, the RI Department of Motor Vehicles, the US Postal Service, and other states. A notice is mailed to the voter whenever a change is made. 

It is critical that voters review their records to avoid confusion on election day.

  • Is your name accurate? Is it hyphenated? Do you still use JR?
  • Is your address current? Are you registered in another city/town?
  • Is the party affiliation correct? 

Go to the RI Department of State Voter Information Center (https://vote.sos.ri.gov) to verify voter registrations or update. 

All new registrations or updates must be made 30 days prior to any election.

NEW: Request a mail ballot online.

Mail Ballot Applications voters can request a mail ballot online at https://vote.ri.gov .

Printed applications are located at the Town Hall or online https://vote.sos.ri.gov/Voter/VotebyMail  The Canvassing office will mail applications upon request (call 683-3157 or email portsmouth_canvassing@portsmouthri.com ). 

Permanent Mail Ballot Voters.

Voters may request to be placed on the Permanent Mail Ballot list that allows the Canvassing office to mail ballot applications for every election chosen by the voter (elections and/or primaries). Contact the Canvassing office to confirm if you are on the list or wish to be added.

Early Voting.

Early voting will begins 20 days prior to every election at the Portsmouth Town Hall Council Chambers during normal business hours and ends at 4:00 PM the day before the election.

  • Monday - Wednesday, 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM
  • Thursday, 8:30 AM to 6:30 PM
  • Friday, 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM.

Polls Open on Election Day.

All polls are open for scheduled State-wide September primaries and the November General Elections. These elections are defined in federal and state law. However, not all locations are available for special elections and primaries. With approval from the RI State Board of Elections, precincts will be combined for the Presidential Preference and unscheduled special elections and primaries.

Notifications will be made in the newspaper, on the Town website, and on the RI Department of State Voter Information Center website.
