SPRING 2026 CITIZENS POLICE ACADEMY APPLICATION

The Portsmouth Police Department conducts a 10 week Citizens Police Academy in the spring. The program allows citizens to learn and experience the inner world of law enforcement, and a firsthand look at the daily operations of the Portsmouth Police Department.

The training consists of classroom instruction, demonstrations, tours, as well as hands-on practical applications. Instructors are members of the Portsmouth Police Department inclusive of patrol officers, supervisors, and administrators. Some of the topics offered were:

Uniformed Patrol; Crime Scene Investigations; Accident Investigations

Traffic Codes; Harbor Patrol Functions; Internet Crimes; Domestic Violence

DUI Enforcement; Firearms Safety and Training Mock Crime Scene Scenarios

The 2020 class was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic which resulted in two summer sessions for the 2021 classes.

Due to the new building being constructed, there were no Citizens Police Academy classes in 2018 and 2019.
